Sunset in Amsterdam

Photo taken on October 4, 2009 at the Amsterdam Harbor in the Netherlands. I had often wondered where Van Gogh got his inspiration to paint the way he painted. Perhaps he was inspired by sunsets like this. This sunset reminded me of his brush strokes and of the colors that he used. It had been a cloudy day; the following day was to be very rainy. The bridge is one of the most used new bridges in Amsterdam. However, I noticed that many people were crossing it by bicycle travel. Parking a bicycle is free, but paying to park a car is extremely expensive in Amsterdam. Bicyclists riding on bicycle paths are given the right of way.

View of Amsterdam, The Netherlands in a canal boat ~ Photo taken on October 5, 2009: The houses in Amsterdam are narrow and tall. Large windows let in light. Pulleys at the top of the houses help to bring in larger pieces of furniture. Parking near canals can be very dangerous. Parking garages are very expensive. Bicycle paths are made and given the right of way. Bicycles are the preferred means of transportation, but there is also a well developed public transportation system too. Cars are small. The Dutch have developed a family bicycled since bicycle parking is free. One of those bicycles is shown in this photo.
